Photographs and Slides 1891-1985; 1891-1965

This series comprises 4 black and white negatives, 1 color negative, 307 black and white, sepia-toned, and color photographs, and 97 color slides of the Immanuel Deaconess Institute (IDI), its grounds, deaconesses, and types of work conducted by the deaconesses. Many of the items are undated, but the collection dates from approximately 1891-1985 with the bulk of the collection dating from 1891-1965. The photographs depict motherhouse and training school leadership; individuals and groups of deaconesses; buildings and property of the IDI; the training school and nursing school; deaconess conference attendees, and investitures and consecrations. The slides are of deaconess life and work and the buildings and property of the institute. A number of slides were numbered in the same location on the slide itself and in the same handwriting. These slides were compiled to create what may have been at one time a slide set. There is no title for this set, but the subject matter is that of the general life and work of the Immanuel Deaconess Motherhouse and its deaconesses. Many of the other slides appear to have also been part of several slide sets, but they are all incomplete. Therefore, order was imposed on these slides and they were grouped together according to subject matter. These slides include depictions of individual deaconesses, deaconess work, and exteriors of buildings that comprised the IDI campus. For arrangement purposes, photographs are divided into various categories. In the container list, formal group portraits refer to those photographs that were taken in a studio setting. Those folders described as containing "formal group photographs," include images that are non-candid shots taken at different functions or events. Within some of these folders are images that could be described as informal or candid shots where the subjects are not posing formally. Box 3 contains a rolled photograph that depicts a panoramic view of the IDI campus and its buildings. It is undated and care should be taken when unrolling the photograph to view it. It is cracked on the left side.
